Who We Are

Manatahi Specialist Rehab is a private allied health service based in Aotearoa, offering culturally grounded, whānau-centered support across the lifespan.

We are a multidisciplinary team of Speech Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Kaitakawaenga – working together to support clients’ functional, emotional, cognitive, and physical wellbeing.

Our purpose is to empower individuals and whānau across Aotearoa to achieve health, function, and wellbeing through expert, collaborative, and culturally responsive therapeutic and rehabilitation services.  We support clients with a wide range of needs – whether they are recovering from injury or illness, or seeking support for communication, physical, cognitive, emotional, or developmental challenges.

We like to see ourselves as a trusted extension of each client’s whānau.  By integrating evidence-based therapeutic practices with Māori cultural principles, we foster deep, respectful relationships that honour both individuality and unity.  Our commitment to professionalism ensures that these connections are built on a foundation of expertise, empowering individuals and their families on their journey toward lasting health and well-being.

Our Team

At Manatahi Specialist Rehab, we work with a trusted network of contracted professionals — each selected for their clinical expertise, cultural responsiveness, and shared commitment to whānau-centred care.

Our core multidisciplinary team includes:

  • Speech-Language Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Psychologists
  • And a dedicated Kaitakawaenga (cultural liaison)

We build flexible support teams around each client and whānau, drawing on the right combination of skills to meet individual goals. Whether you’re recovering from injury or navigating lifelong challenges, our team works in partnership — with each other, with you, and with your whānau.

In addition to our therapeutic team, we maintain close working relationships with professionals in our wider referral network, including:

  • Medical Specialists
  • Psychiatrists
  • Neurologists
  • Paediatricians
  • and other allied health professionals

This ensures that every client has access to the right expertise at the right time, while keeping care coordinated and grounded in the values of manaakitanga, whakawhanaungatanga, and haere tahi — walking together.

If your needs fall outside our direct scope of support, we will do our utmost to connect you with someone who can help. We don’t believe in closing doors — we believe in opening the right ones.

Services

We provide therapeutic and rehabilitation services for clients of all ages, including:

Speech Language Therapy

Speech therapy, also known as speech-language therapy, focuses on diagnosing and treating communication and speech-related disorders. Speech-Language therapists work with people of all ages to address challenges in speech, language, fluency, voice, and communication skills. The goals of speech therapy include improving speech sound production, developing language skills, enhancing communication abilities, addressing voice disorders, higher cognitive language skills like word finding and memory, and assisting with swallowing and feeding difficulties. Therapy sessions are tailored to each individual’s needs and may involve various techniques and tools to promote effective communication and social interactions.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy supports individuals of all ages in developing, recovering, or maintaining the skills needed for daily living and meaningful participation. Occupational therapists work with people experiencing physical, cognitive, sensory, or developmental challenges that affect their ability to engage in everyday tasks such as dressing, eating, writing, attending school, learning or managing work and home life. Therapy may focus on motor coordination, sensory processing, adaptive strategies, and building independence. Each programme is tailored to the individual’s goals, promoting functional living and improved quality of life.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy focuses on improving movement, physical function, and overall mobility. Physiotherapists work with individuals experiencing pain, injury, disability, or movement limitations due to illness, neurological conditions, or developmental challenges. The goal of physiotherapy is to restore strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance through guided exercises, hands-on techniques, education, and rehabilitation plans. Sessions are tailored to each client’s needs to promote recovery, prevent further injury, and support active participation in everyday activities.

Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind, emotions, and behaviour – and at Manatahi, it plays a vital role in helping individuals and whānau navigate the challenges that come with injury, illness, or longterm conditions. Our contracted psychologists work as part of the wider rehabilitation team to support emotional wellbeing, build resilience, and promote positive coping strategies. Psychological input may include trauma-informed care, adjustment counselling, pain management, behavioural support, and cognitive rehabilitation. Whether someone is living with the emotional impact of an injury or facing barriers to daily functioning, psychology at Manatahi focuses on restoring not only health – but hope, identity, and connection. All care is delivered in a culturally responsive and whānau-inclusive way, honoring mana and supporting holistic recovery. We also collaborate with Neuropsychologists who support with comprehensive assessment and collaborative planning to identify strenghts and difficulties in areas such as memory, attention, problem-solving, processing speed, and emotional regulation. Neuropsychology helps bring clarity to complexity – offering insight, direction, and tools for healing the brain while also nurturing wairua, whānau, and identity as part of holistic recovery.

Kaitakawaenga

The Kaitakawaenga plays a vital role in ensuring that care is culturally grounded, respectful, and aligned with tikanga MāoriServing as a bridge between clinicians, clients, and whānau, the Kaitakawaenga supports the therapeutic process by promoting whakawhanaungatanga, facilitating understanding, and helping uphold the mana of every individual and their whānauTheir involvement may include supporting cultural protocols, guiding staff in culturally safe practice, assisting with communication and engagement, and advocating for the needs and values of Māori clientsAs a trusted connector, the Kaitakawaenga strengthens relationships and reinforces our commitment to care that is not only clinically sound, but culturally attuned.

Our Support Model

At Manatahi Specialist Rehab, we walk haere tahi — together. Our support model is rooted in whakawhanaungatanga, the deep connections between people, whānau, and whenua. We believe that true rehabilitation honours the whole person — mind, body, spirit, and culture — and that healing is strongest when it is shared.

Manatahi exists to serve all, but we stand especially committed to supporting Māori across Aotearoa who deserve culturally grounded, whānau-centred rehabilitation. One of the things that sets us apart is the presence of our Kaitakawaenga — a dedicated cultural liaison who walks alongside our clients and clinicians, helping to bridge worlds, uphold tikanga, and ensure care is delivered in a way that strengthens mana and fosters trust.

The koru at the heart of our logo tells this story. At its centre sits the client — kiritaki — encircled by the support of whānau and a collaborative team of therapists. Each small silver koru within the outer layer represents a healing profession — Speech-Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Psychology — working in harmony. The circular flow of the koru reminds us: growth is never linear, but together, we move forward.

Whether recovering after injury, navigating life-long conditions, or seeking private support, Manatahi offers expert, culturally responsive rehabilitation and therapeutic services — wrapping aroha and skill around every person, every time.
